মিরসরাইয়ে ৩০ হাজার একর জমির ওপর এ অঞ্চলের সবচেয়ে বড় অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল হচ্ছে। এখানে ২০ থেকে ৩০ লাখ লোকের কর্মসংস্থান হবে। এই অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল চট্টগ্রামকে তো বটেই, পুরো দেশের চেহারা পাল্টে দেবে।
এখন তৈরি হবে পোশাক পল্লি, খাদ্য প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণ শিল্প। বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র, টেক্সটাইল, অটোমোবাইল প্লান্ট, কনটেইনার টার্মিনালসহ ভারি শিল্প দেখা যাবে দ্বিতীয় পর্যায়েই। আর তৃতীয় তথ্য প্রযুক্তি শিল্পসহ দেখা মিলবে, জ্বালানি সংশ্লিষ্ট শিল্পগুলো। প্রকল্পের চতুর্থ পর্যায়ে অতিথিদের জন্য গেস্ট হাউজ-ভিলা এবং গ্রীণ বেল্ট তৈরি।
এই অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলের চাহিদা এমনই যে রপ্তানি প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণ কর্তৃপক্ষ-বেপজাও আলাদা ভাবে এখানে, ১১৫০ একর জমির ওপর আলাদা জোন নির্মাণ করছে।
পুরোপুরি প্রস্তত হলে, মিরসরাই অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলে ২ হাজার কোটি ডলারের বিনিয়োগ আশা করছে বেজা।
প্রকল্পজুড়েই নিশ্চিত করা হয়েছে প্রকৃতি আর শিল্পের সুষম সহাবস্থান।
এরই মধ্যে প্রায় ৮০ শতাংশ সংযোগ সড়কের কাজ শেষ হয়েছে। পৌঁছে গেছে বিদ্যুৎ সংযোগও। চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের খুব কাছে হওয়ায়, এই অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলের প্লটের ওপরই সবচেয়ে বেশি আগ্রহ দেশি-বিদেশি বিনিয়োগকারীদের।

The Mirsarai Economic Zone (MEZ) will be the industrial capital of Bangladesh and play a pivotal role in fulfilling the country’s investment prospects by establishing ‘One-Stop Services’ for various business enterprises to attract local and foreign investors, said the top executive of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA).
“Development work worth Tk. 2,600 crore, such as the development of a 50-km-long four-lane road inside the zone, nine gates, the 40-km Dhaka-Chittagong highway and an 18-km-long mountain road, is going on inside and near the MEZ,” BEZA executive chairman (secretary) Paban Chowdhury told.In response to a question, he said, “Foreign and local investors have already proposed investing around USD 10 billion in various sectors like shipbuilding, food processing, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), steel, cycle and power plants.”
The MEZ is the first economic zone in the country that will incorporate a residential area, a power plant, a hospital, a
park, seaport, a school and a university.The size of the MEZ is 30,000 acres. We have already acquired 16,000 acres of land to develop the country’s biggest industrial park.According to BEZA officials, the World Bank (WB) has provided financial assistance worth some Tk. 600 crore to develop the two phases, adding that Mirsarai EZ is the first multi-sector EZ situated in the most suitable of the large sites of Bangladesh for setting up industrial establishments.
The BEZA chief said: “In Mirsarai, as well as in Chittagong division, business costs and the cost of living are significantly lower than those in other competing cities of the world.”
BEZA officials said Zhejiang-Jindun, a Chinese company, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a 1,320-MW coal-based power plant near the zone.
Chowdhury disclosed that Rural Power Company Limited (RPCL) Power Gen is establishing a 150-megawatt (MW) power plant, the capacity of which would be increased to 1,000 MW in future. “Summit Power has also evinced keen interest in setting up a 300-MW power plant in the zone,” he added.
